What a hydro-return is, and why it is not just another pump
By Manolo

The difference between moving water and not wasting it. How the 12 V pump works, what the thermostat does and why the unit shuts itself off.
A hydro-return turns your plumbing into a closed loop for a few seconds. Instead of letting the cold water trapped in the hot line run out of the tap, a pump pushes it back to the heater using the cold line.
The full sequence
- You press the button, or trigger it from the app on the WiFi model.
- The internal 12 V pump starts moving the cold water back to the heater.
- When hot water reaches the unit's 40 degree thermostat, the pump shuts itself off.
- You open the tap and it runs hot within moments.
If there is no hot water in the heater, or if there is air in the line, a safety timer cuts the pump after fifteen minutes. On the WiFi model that window is also managed from the app schedule.
Why the thermostat is the key part
Without a thermostat, any pump moves water blindly and somebody has to guess when to stop it. The automatic cutoff at temperature is what keeps the unit from wasting energy or asking you to babysit it.
Similar products exist, almost always imported, pricier and harder to install. The goal is the same, the path there is different.
